I am a latina woman who was born with very curly, very unruly hair. I would also call this both a blessing and a curse because I could straighten my hair anytime I needed too - but if I ever wanted curls for the day, well that option was always there!
However, for as long as I can remember I always struggled, STRUGGLED loving my natural curly locks. Mainly for the fact that I never knew how to make my curls pop. They always dried so frizzy and tasteless. The curls were never defined and to be totally honest, if I didn't feel like straightening my hair and I kept it curly - I'd just throw it up in a bun so that it could hide away from the rest of the world.
I tried EVERYTHING to love my natural hair. Shampoos, conditioners and hair products that were "made for curly hair", but didn't help mine one bit. The "Curly Girl Method", curling it with a curler once it dried to make the curls more tamed and show more definition, but at the end of it all - I still hated the way it always turned out.
Most days I'd just opt for the straightener...
But then I heard about this new trend for curly and wavy hair called the Bowl Method - and I was so skeptical at first, but also really curious to try it out.
I watched countless videos on TikTok, read about 100 articles on Google, and looked at 1,000 before and after pictures and I was willing to give it a go.
The first time I tried it, I don't even think I did it right, but still once my curls air dried - I was OBSESSED!
I actually continue to use this method regularly to avoid straightening my hair less because my curls are so bouncy and way less frizzy I WANT to keep my hair down and show them off.
For anyone who is unfamiliar with the bowl method, this is what you do:
- Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner as usual, then rinse it out and get out of the shower.
- Put your head down, and bring all of your hair to the front of ears overhead. Apply a leave-in hair treatment and finishing cream to your curls making sure to distribute evenly. Prayer hands work great for this.
- Fill a bowl with lukewarm water, then immerse your tresses in it for a few seconds.
- Lift your head out of the water, then grab the strands in the palms of your hands, compressing them to create curls. Scrunching and squishing repeatedly, making sure to get all areas of the hair.
- Let the water that leaves your hair while scrunching fall back into the bowl.
- Repeat the hair dunking, then scrunching four times.
- Then all you have to do is let your hair dry naturally.
Once you completed all four dunks, it is important not to comb or brush your hair out. During the process, while you put the hair products in your hair then dip and scrunch, combing or brushing your hair is totally fine. Once all steps of the bowl method are completed however, it is important to leave them alone and let them do their own thing naturally.
If you haven't tried this method yet, I highly recommend it. It's been such a game changer.
Here is my before and after.
Let me know if you've tried this method before. Did it work for you? Leave your comments and before and afters down below.
Until next time,
Jess ♥️
